1. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is known for its antioxidant properties and its role in collagen synthesis which makes it a vital molecule for skin health. Vitamin C limits the damage induced by ultraviolet (UV) light exposure. It is not a 'sunscreen' because it does not absorb light in the UVA or UVB spectrum but rather, the antioxidant activity of Vitamin C protects against UV-induced damage caused by free radicals.
2. Folic Acid
Also known as Vitamin B9, possesses concentrations of antioxidants that work to reduce levels of oxidative stress in the skin as well as neutralize harmful free radicals that are present in the environment. Folic Acid skin care properties may also provide increased hydration by bolstering skin-barrier function. This can improve moisture retention and alleviate skin dryness.
3. Thiamine
Best known as Vitamin B1, is a precursor, that is, it's a natural chemical that acts in the body of a cofactor - a molecule that helps some enzymes do their jobs. For skin care, Vitamin performs an important role in regeneration of collagen, the structural molecule that keeps skin supple and strong.
4. Niacin (a.k.a. Vitamin B3)
Recognised in the early 20th century as the vitamin that prevents pellegra, an epidemic disease with cutaneous lesions – think severely scaly skin and often mistaken for leprosy - and was originally named vitamin PP for pellegra-preventive. Historically it’s also been associated with the treatment of acne. It’s been shown to have positive effects on skin hydration, increased production of fibroblasts (which helps reduce the signs of wrinkles and fine lines) and has been shown to even skin tone, helping attain a glowing complexion.
5. Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6, also known as Pyridoxine, is required by the body for the development of red bloodcells, cell production and protein metabolism, which assists with the growth and repair of the skin cells. Vitamin B6 can also help to regulate some of the hormone irregularities which can cause acne flare ups, to keep your skin clear and acne-free, especially during menstruation, as well as reducing the inflammation that co-exists with acne flare ups to leave you with calm, clear skin.
6. Vitamin A
Retinal, retinol and retinoic acid are important to cell production and growth. Vitamin A also stimulates fibroblasts—the cells responsible for developing tissue that keeps skin firm and healthy—in the deep layers of your skin.
7. Calcium
We all know the importance of ample calcium intake for healthy teeth and bones, but it’s also an essential mineral that benefits skin health. It plays a major role in providing firmness and elasticity for the skin.
8. Magnesium
Magnesium skincare is also known for its ability to reduce the severity of breakouts by healing and calming inflammation on the surface of the skin. This healing ability will help to reveal a clearer, calmer and more even toned complexion whilst reducing the appearance of your imperfections. Magnesium deficiency will result in loss of fatty acids that are essential for maintaining both elasticity and moisture, which are key to achieving a smoother, plumper and younger complexion, without these acids skin is likely to become dry and inflamed.
9. Zinc
Zinc is one of the most important healing minerals for skin health, and is particularly important for acne sufferers. Zinc controls the production of oil in the skin and helps control some of the hormones that can cause acne. It's also believed to have antioxidant properties to protect against premature aging of the skin and muscles. Zinc also helps to speed up the rate of skin healing after an injury and is highly beneficial to all parts of the immune system.
